TRANSFORMING THE WAY TEAMS WORK WITH CHALLENGING CLIENTS
SafePath © is being used at the following institutes

What is SafePath?
SafePath is an evidence-supported program, developed by Dr. David Bernstein, that empowers teams working with clients in psychiatric, forensic, addiction, and related settings. It is an integration of Schema Therapy and Positive Psychology principles, applied systemically to teams and organizations. SafePath focuses on clients’ emotional needs, especially attachment and safe limits, and recognizing and working with “modes”, extreme emotional states that dominate a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior at a particular moment. Its goals are to strengthen team functioning, intervene effectively with challenging behaviors, and create ward climates based on safety and connection.
How are teams trained in SafePath?
We use a “train-the-trainers” model. Graduates complete an online, 28-hour (8-session) course and are certified to train and coach the teams in their institutions. Our goal is to help your organization become self-sufficient in implementing and maintaining high-quality SafePath practices.
Becoming a certified SafePath Professional or Trainer/Coach
We certify the professionals who take our train-the-trainers courses. They earn certification as SafePath Trainers/Coaches, so they can train and coach the teams in their organizations. We also certify the professionals who work in teams. They earn certification as SafePath Professionals, by taking the SafePath trainings given by their colleagues, within their institutions.

WHAT OUR GRADUATES SAY

“SafePath is ‘a gentle nutcracker’ capable of cracking even the hardest nut. The method is about fulfilling basic needs and that affects people. We all have basic needs and when they are met, positive forces are released. The method cultivates the soft side without being ‘flaky.’ Justice is a pretty hard world where that wouldn’t work.”

“SafePath makes it possible for the team members to get a better view of the destructive patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that repeat themselves and the coping that result from the maladaptive emotional states of our patients. Since our cooperation with SafePath we have noticed that the number of incidents has decreased, there is less disagreement within the team, and that the team members are able to do their work with more energy and fun.”

“We are very enthusiastic about the results that we see. We learned a powerful language -‘schema modes’- for describing the struggles of our patients, and our own struggles to work with them. In addition to evoking greater compassion in us, the training gave us concrete tools for interventions, such as how to set limits, provide support, and confront our patients empathically.”

“SafePath creates a common language, almost everyone can speak to it. Also many of our youth with mild intellectual disabilities. The iModes enable our patients to use words to describe behaviors and feelings that were hardly spoken about before. Because of the images and the descriptions on the cards, they start to recognize things. The same is true for the staff. SafePath is about fulfilling all basic needs.”

“I had been training and coaching treatment teams for youth in Schema Therapy for several years, but SafePath provided me with more continuity and enrichment. It is a great way to successfully implement principles and techniques from Schema Therapy on a treatment unit, supporting staff to create a safe group climate.”
