BECOMING A CERTIFIED SAFEPATH TRAINER/COACH
SafePath trainers/coaches are mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, etc.) and educators who graduate from our online Train-the-Trainers program.
They train and coach teams in their organizations in SafePath. They take a leading role in implementing SafePath within their institutions. They give an initial, two-day Basic Training in their institutions, where teams learn basic concepts and skills of Safe Path, followed by periodic (e.g., once per 6 months) booster sessions. They provide coaching for teams that have taken the initial SafePath training. Coaching typically occurs once per two weeks in sessions of one hour with the team. Coaching for the team is an essential component of SafePath. It needs to begin as soon as the Basic Training is completed, and be ongoing so that the team consistently applies SafePath in its work. SafePath trainers/coaches also act as consultants to their organizations on how to implement SafePath.

Course format
The Train-the-Trainers course consists of 8 online sessions of 3.5 hours (28 total hours), which are usually given on Thursday and Friday mornings from 9:00-12:30 CET over a period of one month. The format is playful and engaging, with demonstrations, and serious games and exercises in breakout rooms. Many of the games and exercises use the iModes cards, which participants receive prior to the course and are included in the price. The first 4 sessions are an online version of the SafePath Basic Training. The last 4 sessions focus on learning how to train and coach teams in SafePath. The first 4 online sessions are a prerequisite to taking the last 4 sessions, except when participants have already taken a Basic Training Course within the past year. Enrollment is limited, and applications are processed in the order received. No prior knowledge of Schema Therapy is required.
Certification as a SafePath Trainer/Coach at Levels I and II
On completing the Train-the-Trainers course, graduates are certified as SafePath trainer/coaches for a period of two years. They receive all of the materials necessary to train and coach teams in their organizations, including a trainer/coaches manual, the slides and agendas for the SafePath Basic Training, and a workbook for teams. Graduates from the Netherlands can also earn 28 SKJ-points (Stichting Kwaliteitsregister Jeugd; www.skjeugd.nl) for their participation in the course.
We certify trainers/coaches as either level I or II. The only difference is that only level I trainers are allowed to train teams independently, without a certified co-trainer. Level II coaches must give trainings with a co-trainer. Both level I and II trainers/coaches are allowed to coach teams independently (i.e., without a co-coach). We usually designate graduates with a strong Schema Therapy background as level I trainers/coaches. We designate other graduates (without a Schema Therapy background) as level II. Although level I trainers may give SafePath trainings independently, we still recommend that they give trainings in their organizations together with a certified co-trainer, especially in their first year after graduating from the train-the-trainers program. Level II trainers may apply to become level I by giving SafePath training and coaching over a period of one to two years, taking supervision, and completing an Advanced Train-the-Trainers course (see below).
Supervision
To support graduates in their new roles as trainers/coaches, we offer online supervision with Dr. David Bernstein, Ms. Limor Navot, or another certified supervisor. Supervision is usually in a group format (2-5 members from the same organization) with one-hour sessions scheduled about every other week.
Recertification: The Advanced Train-the-Trainers course
Trainer/coaches may be recertified for another two years by taking an Advanced Train-the-Trainers course. The Advanced course is 7-hours (2x, 3.5-hour sessions). It focuses on a special advanced topic (e.g., leadership, resilience) and lets participants deepen their expertise together with fellow trainers/coaches from diverse organizations.
